Police say couple who served as church officers stole $174K

KINGSTON (AP) - Police say a couple stole more than $174,000 while serving as officers of a northeastern Pennsylvania church.

The Rev. Paul Metzloff called Kingston police in August because his Holy Trinity Lutheran Church was nearly broke. When police examined bank records, they determined that secretary Cherie White and her husband Keith, the church president, had stolen the money since 2010.The couple's attorney, Peter Moses, says they're cooperating with investigators as the "first step in the healing process" with the church.Police say Cherie White, who is 41, used an unauthorized debit card to buy things and draw cash from the church bank account. She also began writing herself extra paychecks, including 16 just last year. Her 51-year-old husband allegedly used the bank card to steal about 10 percent of the money.
