Mitchell's huge game propels PV
Mike Mitchell has been hard to ignore.
The Pleasant Valley senior entered a Week 6 showdown against rival East Stroudsburg South as the Times News area's leading rusher, averaging 122.4 yards per game.Against the Cavaliers, Mitchell's presence was undeniable, as he piled up 385 yards of total offense - 301 rushing, 84 receiving - in the Bears' 52-38 win over East Stroudsburg South to earn Player of the Week honors."It's big. It's big for them," Mitchell said. "They depend on me to make plays. I know my coaches depend on me to make plays. ... The offensive line did a good job for us to make plays and we just made plays."As he has so many times this season, Mitchell showed the ability to find the end zone from anywhere on the field against the Cavaliers, with scoring runs of 43, 9 and 84-yards, in addition to a 73-yard score on a hook-and-lateral."Mike's talent allows him to be placed in different spots," said Pleasant Valley head coach Mark Versuk. "He can run out of the I and the shotgun; we can put him in as the slot receiver, or we can give him the ball on a sweep. He also can run down the middle of the field for passes, and he can catch the short screens."There's no real place that we can't put him, aside from maybe a tight end position. It makes it tough for the defense to find out where he's at."Even when they do see him, they often can't catch him."He has that burst and that acceleration that not many players around here have," Versuk noted. "He'll be patient enough to find a lane and then he hits a second gear that not everybody has."While his speed and agility are incomparable, it's his vision that impresses Versuk the most."This is really his first year starting and running the ball," Versuk said. "I see him improving every week as far as finding the lanes, reading the linebackers and knowing when to cutback and when to turn upfield."He always had speed. When you're that fast, you're used to just turning the corner. Now he's able to turn the corner if he wants, but if he doesn't have it, he can find the lane. He's been able to find the right spots, and that's all we're asking him to do."Mitchell has been a key cog for a Bears' offense that has been firing on all cylinders. Pleasant Valley finished with 617 yards of total offense against East Stroudsburg South, with quarterback Brandon Keyes throwing for 261 yards and wide receiver Justin Richardson haling in five passes for 144 yards and two scores. The Bears are averaging an area best 454.5 yards and 45.2 points per game this season."It takes the pressure off our offense," Mitchell said. "There are too many people to watch out for. There are too many weapons on offense for the defense to key on any one guy."If you stack the box, we can throw it; if you try to defend the pass, we can run it."With an area best 917 yards rushing (9.41 YPC) and 17 touchdowns, Mitchell is sure to be the focal point of opposing defensive coordinators the rest of the way.But that doesn't mean another monster game is out of the question."It all depends on the night," he said. "If it's 30 or 40 carries I'm getting, or five or 10 catches, and you combine all the yards, I think so."And I know with my offensive line, if I get that many carries, I can put up a lot of yards and our offense can put up a lot of points."
