An officer was on patrol at 12:10 a.m. when he saw a maroon Jeep traveling on Mauch Chunk Street without head lamps or taillights. Despite the officer's use of lights and sirens, the Jeep continued along its way before finally coming to a stop at the intersection of Greenwood and East Broad streets. The driver was identified as Robert Arthur Bachert, 66, of Bull Run Street.Despite showing signs of intoxication, Bachert told the officer he only had two beers and began arguing, saying he "was only going to Coaldale and does it every day."Bachert was given, and failed, several field sobriety tests. He refused to take a blood test, but a preliminary breath test registered a 0.111 alcohol content. He will be cited for driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to use the required lights.
