Weissport borough hall in need of repairs

Weissport Borough Council said Monday it is having a difficult time finding a roofing contractor to make repairs to the borough hall.

Councilman Arland Moyer said he contacted three different contractors and none showed up to assess the work that needs to be done. The council said the work doesn't have to go out on bids because the repair costs are below the required threshold needed for quotations. Also, the council said last month it isn't sure how to word any bids because of the complexity of the work involved.Specifically, the council said the restroom roofs leak and there could be squirrels residing in them. The eaves leading to the entrance of the borough hall have large openings that allow birds and other vermin to get under the shingles.Brenda Leiby, a council member, expressed concern that the roof is so weak that "I'm concerned heavy snow could cause the roof to collapse."Moyer said he will again try to find a contractor to assess the situation and determine the work that is needed. Leiby said she's hoping the repairs can occur before winter.Any contractor, licensed and insured, who is interested in doing the work should contact the borough at 610-377-5608.In other business:• Leiby reported that a problem with homeless people living in the woods below the Route 209 Thomas J. McCall Memorial Bridge has been resolved. She said she spoke with one of the people living there and he told her all have abandoned the premises.Leiby said the person she spoke with even cleaned up the debris.Last month a complaint was aired about four or five homeless people living at the location.• The council praised Chief of Police Denna Krammes for the work she has done so far in the borough. For the first time in many months, the council was given a police activity report. Krammes began patrolling last month. In her first month, the part-time officer provided one assist to state police, found a rifle, handled a domestic disturbance, issued two traffic citations and handed out three parking tickets.• Trick-or-Treat night will be observed in the borough from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 26.Krammes said she will be available to provide patrols during trick-or-treating.• Joe Flickinger, representing the Lehighton Fire Department, said the fire department recently handed out free smoke detectors to Weissport residents. The smoke detector handout was coordinated with the American Red Cross. He said 171 smoke detectors were installed in 52 homes."That was a wonderful community service," Leiby said.Flickinger told the council, "We're all about prevention."He said several other groups participated in the smoke detector installations.• The council said it is thinking about winter and plans to enforce its odd-even parking regulations.A borough ordinance says residents may park on the even-numbered side of the street on even-numbered days and on the odd-numbered side of the street on odd-numbered days. The parking ordinance is in effect from Nov. 1 through April 1.
