Bears fail to advance
BETHLEHEM - Masani Francis was disappointed, yet satisfied.
Though the Pleasant Valley junior was eliminated in the second round of the District 11 Class AAA singles tournament at Lehigh University Monday, Francis was pleased with her effort-and the progress she's made since the beginning of the season."For this season, I know I wasn't really playing up to my potential, so I thought coming out here and at least winning that first-round match, I kind of played better than I have been playing," Francis said. "I'm just proud of myself, even for not winning the second one, I thought I played well."Francis earned a 6-1, 6-1 first round win over Pottsville's Michala Zembas, before falling 6-1, 6-0 to Nazareth's Halle DeNardo in the second round."I knew it was going to be tough, but I thought maybe if I could keep the ball in play, I could have a chance," Francis said of her match against the unseeded DeNardo."But I made a lot of unforced errors."While Halle DeNardo knocked out Francis, Sydney DeNardo did the same to Pleasant Valley's Haley White.White suffered a 6-2, 6-0 setback at the hands of the eighth-seeded Sydney DeNardo.Like Francis, White was frustrated with her loss. But the disappointment was overshadowed by the thrill of competing in the event for the first time."It was really exciting," she said. "I didn't make districts last year, so this year I definitely wanted to make it."I came in and tried to play my best but she got the best of me. … She's a killer. She has a lot of power. She's very good."Pleasant Valley head coach Mark Allison is hoping the experience gained Thursday by White and Francis, both juniors, will give the duo the experience needed to come back even stronger next season."It was great. Getting two girls into the tournament is a real big accomplishment for our team," Allison said. "They're both underclassmen and I think we can learn from the experience we got this year and carry it over into next season."It was a tough draw all the way through. … This was as good a competition for No. 1 and 2 singles that we've probably ever seen in district tennis."UPSET … Seven of the eight seeded players made it through to the quarterfinals. The only seeded player to fall was Northampton's Emma Angle. The fourth-seeded Angle was defeated 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 by Nazareth's Halle DeNardo in the first round.BROTHERLY LOVE ...
