Bonnie and Clyde opens in Lehighton

On one side of the door is First Street, Lehighton. On the other side is an upscale restaurant and pub straight out of a trendy historic district.

Bonnie and Clyde Pub and Grill opened July 23, and celebrated with a ribbon cutting on Sept. 20.Steve Mazalewski, co-owner of the restaurant with wife Joyce, said, "When you walk in, you say, 'Wow, where am I?' "Just inside the front doors is a terra-cotta tiled foyer. Through glass doors featuring life-sizes photos of the notorious Bonnie holding a rifle on the left and her counterpart Clyde on the right welcome patrons into the warm-toned bar and restaurant."Everything is put together to take you back to the '30s," he said. The first things you see are the high-backed wooden stools around the bar and light glistening off the pressed-metal tile ceiling. Straight ahead is the old bank's safe, now a freezer for the restaurant. The building was constructed in 1925 and was used as a bank for many years, so we picked bank robbers for the theme, Mazalewski said. The name was Joyce's idea.Dividing the bar from the dining room is a wall with teller bars made from copper spaced throughout the openings. On the other side are tall wooden tables and booths upholstered in a deep red fabric with gold threading in a paisley tapestry. Each booth and table is named after a gangster or bank robber - Al Capone, Baby Face Nelson, John Dillinger and Machine Gun Kelly. A framed biography hangs on the wall near each table. Mazalewski said people can learn a little something about each man. If they like one booth over another, then they can reserve it by name when they call to make a reservation.Bar manager Julie Rambo said they get very busy on the weekends, so reservations are crucial."I think Bonnie and Clyde is tagged 15 to 20 times a day (on Facebook)," she said. The word has really gotten out. Mazalewski said the first Monday they were open was pretty slow, but by the following Monday their patronage had doubled. The restaurant has two chefs, one for meals and one for desserts. Everything is made fresh from the highest quality meats and foods and no frozen seafood, said general manager Penny Zimmerman. They also have a vegetarian line. One item that seems to stand out is the crabcakes. No fillers, just crab, Mazalewski said. One patron from Maryland said they were the best he has had outside of Maryland."We are a restaurant that caters to fine dining," he said. "We won't be the cheapest, but we'll give you the service. Great food and great service."This pub and restaurant also has 36 beers on tap and 60 other varieties in bottles including craft beers. Rambo said there are even craft beers that could appeal to the wine drinker. Or maybe they might just want something different, such as chocolate-covered pretzel porter, peanut butter and chocolate porter or maybe the blueberry maple syrup porter."It's come a long way since the Miller Light and Coors Light days," she said. "The selection accommodates the novice craft drinker all the way up to the experienced."Name: Bonnie & Clyde Pub and GrillAddress: 111 N.
