Coroner: Drugs played role in Schuylkill motel deaths

A Tamaqua man and a Saint Clair woman who were found dead in a Pottsville motel room last month died of drug overdoses, according to the Schuylkill County Coroner's Office.

The bodies of Charles G. Harig III, 31, and Brittany L. Guris, 26, were found Aug. 26 in a room at the Pottsville Motor Inn, one day after Harig rented the room. They were found by the front desk clerk after he was alerted to a problem by Harig's sister. The coroner's office made the determination of drug overdose as the cause of death after receiving the results of toxicology tests, which were conducted at NMS Labs in Willow Grove.Harig's cause of death was determined to be acute poisoning due to a combination of heroin and methamphetamine, while Guris died of an acute morphine overdose. The manner of death is listed as undetermined, which gives Pottsville police an opportunity to conduct additional investigations if they determine it is warranted. The toxicology tests were conducted after police found drug paraphernalia, including wax packets stamped "Recession," were discovered near the victims' bodies. So far this year, 61 Schuylkill County deaths have been listed as drug related by coroner Dr. David Moylan. Of those, 19 were heroin-related deaths, while 28 were from fentanyl.
