Palmerton cruises past Bangor

After three straight losses to start the season, Palmerton had some soul searching to do.

Despite the difficult schedule that pitted the Blue Bombers against Southern Lehigh, Northwestern and Saucon Valley, they learned a lot about themselves.Their education through defeat has sparked a two-game win streak, including an offensive outpouring in Friday night's 35-13 victory over Bangor in front of their Homecoming crowd."I'm proud of the kids and their effort, the way they have bounced back after an 0-3 start. They've strung two wins together," Palmerton head coach Chris Walkowiak said. "We're actually getting some confidence going into the second half of the season."The senior standout duo of Garrett Perschy and Mike Stasko shone brightly again, as they displayed their offensive prowess on repeated possessions.Perschy, who connected on 17-of-28 passes on the night, bested a previous personal and school record with 267 yards through the air, while also rushing 23 times for 126 yards. His total offense added up to 393 all-purpose yards."That's a credit to everybody, not just me," Perschy said. "From the linemen to the receivers making plays, to the backs making cuts and running out fakes. That's a team stat, not an individual stat."Stasko, on the other hand, put together 45 yards on the ground, while pulling in five receptions for 105 yards, and his team's first three scores. The talented Bomber spoke of the importance of his team's early start, which resulted in a 21-0 lead at halftime."I thought that was a big step for us to grab the early lead tonight," Stasko said. "Bangor definitely didn't quit and they actually put together some plays to take the momentum late in the game."The Slaters, who also earned their first win of the season in week four, had difficulties getting things going through the first two frames, but made quick work of it in the second half. The first play from scrimmage yielded a 62-yard TD run by Saivaughn Vass, a senior running back. However, the winners responded with their own score, as they put together a 75-yard, 11-play drive that resulted with a Perschy strike to Jared Mooney for the 9-yard score."I thought we fought (Bangor) off well, because we definitely got a challenge from them later in the game," Stasko said."We ask every week for people to step up and provide a spark, and tonight was no different," Walkowiak said. "If people are going to key on one or two of our players, we have other capable players that can make plays and I think that showed tonight."Rounding out the scoring was a nice late drive that saw junior Mike Eckhart finish it off with a strong run from the 15.Next week, the Crusaders of Notre Dame of Green Pond will host the Bombers, proving the road won't be easy."Defensively, we need to work on our tackling and sharpen up our communication," Walkowiak said. "They will score and they will get yards, but when they do, we have to be able to respond and not be shaken."WHAT A HOMECOMING ... With the second straight win, the Blue Bombers can safely enjoy the remainder of their homecoming weekend. Plenty of Palmerton alumni were in attendance at the contest, witnessing a strong showing by their blue and white on the gridiron.ALMOST PERFECT ... Bangor failed to commit (or get called for) a penalty all night, as the Bombers had six called against them for 45 yards. Also, neither team committed a turnover.BAND TOGETHER ... Bangor's band blasted beats throughout the game and put on a halftime show to impress, displaying their melodious prowess throughout the evening's festivities.
