Carbon County is helping the Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame with its proposed Jim Thorpe mausoleum project.

On Thursday, the county commissioners adopted a resolution regarding the application to the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development for a Local Share Account grant in the amount of $72,770 on behalf of the Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame for the project.The project includes a third bronze statue of Jim Thorpe, as well as additional work around the monument to increase the appeal to visitors to Thorpe’s grave site and prevent vehicles from driving on the grassy areas.On Tuesday, the Carbon County Planning Commission also wrote a letter of support for the project.“The Carbon County Planning Commission recognizes the continuing commitment of the Jim Thorpe Area Hall of Fame Inc. members to honor the memory and athletic achievements of James Francis ‘Jim’ Thorpe, the ‘Greatest Athlete of the Twentieth Century.’ ”The borough has been honoring Thorpe since his death and erected an area around his mausoleum with two 8-foot statues depicting his athletic abilities.The first statue, which depicts him playing football, was unveiled during the 11th annual Jim Thorpe Birthday Celebration weekend in May 2007, while the second, which shows him throwing a discus, was unveiled in May 2011.
