Tamaqua tops Tribe in finale

The Tamaqua and Lehighton golf teams have not had many wins this season.

However, there has been notable improvement occurring on both squads. When the Raiders and Indians met at Mahoning Valley Country Club on Wednesday, there wasn't a spot in team districts or any type of title on the line. But that didn't make the result any less important. When the sun set over the horizon, it was Tamaqua posting a 346-408 Schuylkill League victory."It's nice to get the win," Tamaqua head coach Bill Kaczmarczyk said. "We're really just trying to teach the kids the life-long game of golf and they definitely have improved from the beginning of the season until now, so that's a great thing."With the end of the regular season coming to a close, players are preparing for the postseason. The Blue Raiders are sending three players to the all-league meet, which will be held on Blue Mountain's home course at the Schuylkill Country Club on Monday. The 2015 Times News Golfer of the Year, Carson Schoener, will be joined by junior Ryan Fredrickson and sophomore Nate Shellhammer at the event. Kaczmarczyk was happy with the whole team's showing and hopes that those three can utilize their recent strong play to build momentum for the meet on Monday."With the three of them going, we are hoping that they do their best and represent us well, because that's all you can really ask them to do," he said. "This should serve as a nice springboard for them, going into that meet."Fredrickson earned medalist honors on the day, shooting a nine-over 81 for the Raiders, while Schoener followed with an 83."Carson has been the leader all year long for us," Kaczmarczyk said. "With the younger kids on the team, he shows them how to hit the ball in certain situations, helps to encourage them and picks them up when they have a bad shot or a bad hole."It has been a learning experience for all involved with the Indians, who earned their sole win a few weeks ago against East Stroudsburg North. Head coach Trevor Miller made his third season all about the progress of the student-athletes."Our goal at the beginning of the year was to have our scores improve as the season went along," Miller said. "In order for that to happen, you have to be able to put in the time and effort. Everyday that we haven't had a match, we've had practice. But with the golf season, those are rare."Sam Maholick had the lowest round for Lehighton with a 97 - the first time all season that the sophomore broke 100."The course is in great shape, so it was good conditions for me to break 100," he said. "It feels good because I know it's been a lot of hard work. I shortened up my swing a little, figured out how to hit my irons a little straighter and kept it in the fairway."YOUNG AND OLD ... Both Tamaqua and Lehighton sport a ton of underclassmen throughout their rosters, spelling possible success for the future of both programs. Lehighton, who only has one senior, returns a majority of players for next year, while the Blue Raiders have two seniors.GETTING OUT WHAT YOU PUT IN ... As with any sport, both Miller and Kaczmarczyk admitted to the idea of pouring in large amounts of practice in order to improve."The guys have to play as much as they possibly can between now and next season," Miller said. "With golf, you learn more and more by playing as much as possible, so we are hoping to hold more open practices over the course of the summer and see what we have once it comes time for the season to start next year."Tamaqua 346, Lehighton 408TAMAQUARyan Fredrickson 81, Carson Schoener 83, Tavio Agosti 86, Nate Shellhammer 96.LEHIGHTONSam Maholick 97, Devin Scott 98, Stephen Heery 103, Lukas David 110.Played at Mahoning Valley Country Club, Par 72.
