Perschy, Stasko lead Bombers

PEN ARGYL - Palmerton coach Chris Walkowiak enters most games with the intent of focusing on his team's running game.

Saturday afternoon though, Walkowiak turned his attention to controlling Pen Argyl's ability to run the ball. The Bombers did exactly that and rolled to a 40-6 Colonial League victory ."Our game plan every week is we want to run the ball," Walkowiak said. "Today, we wanted to come in to stop the run. Our kids did a good job lining up, penetrating and reading their keys. We were mentality sharper today than we have been the last two weeks, so we limited a lot of the big plays."We made Pen Argyl grind it out to get yards, but we did just as well in containing them."While the Bombers' defensive front held the Green Knights under 100 yards rushing, it didn't take the Bombers long to get there thanks to their very first offensive series.Instead of relying on his Bombers' attack of chunking out some yardage on the ground, the locals immediately went to an air attack. On the first play from scrimmage, Garrett Perschy found Aaron Stasko for a 65-yard reception. Three plays later, Perschy hit the other Stasko brother, Mike, in stride for a 21-yard touchdown reception. It only took the Bombers a little over two minutes. With the Bombers still leading 7-0 early in the second quarter, they finally received the spark they have been looking for this season. On the first play, instead of handing the ball off to one of his running backs, Perschy went right back to passing the ball. This time, Jordan Nelson hauled in a catch for a 32-yard touchdown reception."Today, we just clicked," Walkowiak said. "All week I have been telling people, and they have been asking what we needed, and I said that, "All we need is a spark. And, once we get a spark, we could catch fire,' and today I think we caught a little bit on fire."Palmerton's next two offensive series also ended in touchdown receptions thanks to Perschy and Mike Stasko - a 15-yard TD reception with 4:43 left in the half, and then a 66-yard TD reception with 2:12 left. The big plays allowed the Bombers to build a 27-0 lead.It ended up being a career day for Mike Stasko, who also added a kickoff return for a touchdown in the third quarter and then capped the Bombers' scoring in the fourth with a 15-yard scamper. The five-touchdown day served as a bit of a pick-me up for Stasko and the rest of his Bomber teammates, allowing them to post their first victory of the season after three losses."This whole week the coaches tried to bring our spirits up, and they obviously did a good job because we were hungry and it showed today," said Stasko, who finished with 255 total yards of offense (41 rushing, 129 receiving, 85 return). "I really don't think I was contributing enough the first couple of weeks like I should have been."So, I was just trying to stay hungry today and stay patient and let the game come to me."The Bombers were successful in all facets of their game plan."We challenged our captains to lead us through adversity," Walkowiak said. "Everyone gets down once and awhile, and our team has been down lately. We came out here to play to win today and that was the whole focus."ONE FOR THE PORTFOLIO ...With his five touchdowns, Stasko has tied Chris Siracuse for the school's record in career touchdowns (33).BRICK WALL ...The Bombers' Cole George had three tackles for loss, while Kyle Kralik had two tackles for loss, including a sack.THREE-IN-A-ROW ...It may have been Palmerton's first victory of the season, but it's the Bombers third straight win over Pen Argyl. In fact, the blowout victory makes it two straight over the Green Knights on the "Hill."
