Keyes leads PV

ALLENTOWN - While most people put their faith into practice on Sundays, Pleasant Valley junior quarterback Brandon Keyes exercises his faith on Friday nights.

Mike Mitchell, Justin Richardson, and Michael Brown have given Keyes good reason to put his faith in his play makers this season. Friday night against William Allen was no different. The talented signal-caller displayed his reliance upon his receivers time and time again. He totaled five passing scores and spurred the Bears to a huge 59-14 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over William Allen at J. Birney Crum Stadium."I admit that I expected our team to be pretty good this year," Keyes said afterward. "We're meeting those high expectations of ours so far. "After the loss two weeks ago, it has been nice to continue to build on our momentum."The Bears are now 3-1 and turning heads throughout the area as one of the more talented offenses.Mitchell scored the winners' first three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving), while Richardson and Brown both caromed a pair of TD catches during the rout."When the play unfolds, I get pretty good reads my receivers' matchups," explained Keyes. "But I just have faith that my athletes are going to make the plays. We have to build up our defense a little more because next week is going to be just as tough of a game."With just under eight minutes off the clock, the Bears were up 22-0, as Mitchell displayed his speed and great hands with brilliant catches for consistent scores."Tonight was definitely a good team win," said Pleasant Valley head coach Mark Versuk. "Our offense did a great job executing tonight."Next, it was Richardson's turn to shine after a Canary touchdown. He scored the next two Bears' touchdowns with receptions of 59 and 37 yards respectively. His pair of scores made it 38-14 with 9:21 remaining in the first half.Brown took his moment next with two more scores for the locals. He put the winners up 52-14 at the intermission with point-producing catches of 22 and 66 yards,"Our defense was a little slow early on, I thought," Versuk continued. "But they began to pick it up as the game went along."The continuous clock went into effect in the second half. The Bears tacked on their final score in the third quarter when senior Joe Lees rumbled in from the 14-yard line.A road trip to Pocono Mountain West's new turf stadium looms in the near future for the Bears, causing concern in the eyes of Keyes and company."This will technically be their first home game, so they will be prepared and ready to show off for their fans," Keyes said. "We just have to keep building our defense, working hard, and hopefully this momentum continues."BEARLY SATISFIED ... Versuk still sees plenty of room for improvement among his team, saying, "We have to continue to focus on tackling, sustaining blocks, and working on special teams."NO GIMMES ... Pleasant Valley proved near perfect in the turnover department, as it recovered a fumble (Josh Fitzsimmons) to set up a score, while recording an interception (James Miller) that led to another score.THE BLIND SIDE ... Allen quarterback Romeo Wright dropped back to pass early in the second quarter. Mitchell, playing cornerback, leveled him for a huge loss and forced the afore-mentioned fumble.
