Fast response by Tamaqua firefighters saved a small, wood-frame building after a fire broke out in the auto sales office shortly before noon Wednesday.

Firefighters were dispatched by the Schuylkill Communications Center for a possible commercial building fire at 325 S. Center St., Route 309, at 11:25 a.m.Those at the scene said smoke was pouring from the building when firefighters arrived.Damaged in the incident was a one-story office building of Mermon Motors. The firm deals in used car sales, sedan and van service, trolley rentals and title and notary service.Those at the scene said responders cut a hole in the roof to access the affected area. Fiberglass-type insulation that had fallen from overhead was visible on the floor just inside the office front door around 12:15 p.m. as firefighters worked inside to make sure the fire was extinguished. The cause of the fire is under investigation but it believed to be electrical in nature.One firefighter was treated at the scene for heat-related illness.Heavy noontime traffic was halted in both directions on Route 309 was backed up, compounded by the typical heavy Wednesday Farmers Market traffic volume.There was no report on the extent of damage.
