Thorpe, Tribe play to soccer tie
It was the classic case of a game that neither team deserved to lose.
Although the Lehighton and Jim Thorpe girls soccer teams squared off in Schuylkill League action on Tuesday, neither team left the field with a blemish on its record. In the end, 100 minutes wasn't enough to separate the schools, as the Olympians and Indians tied 1-1 after two overtime sessions."It was definitely our most thrilling game of the season," said Jim Thorpe head coach Tom Condly. "We got one early, but we've given up leads in three games this season. We talked about protecting it, which we did a pretty good job of it. Unfortunately, they scored the tying goal in the second half."Thorpe's Alyssa Dulski scored with 18:38 left in the first half. The Olympians tallied eight shots on goal during the half while Lehighton totaled only three."I told them to stay positive," Condly said about the message to his team at intermission. "We've been in a lot of close games and we know that we have to come out harder."But the Indians looked like a different team after halftime.Jada Whiteman was frequently creative in space on her half of the pitch while teammate Morgan Yurasits hit corner after corner. Yurasits beautifully delivered the ball into the box on multiple occasions, but the Indians couldn't finish in traffic despite ample opportunities."They're exhausted," said Lehighton head coach Rich Emmert after the contest. "Today they played a totally different game than what we've seen. All we needed was just one more bounce and it would have been over. That was the best and most intense game that we've played. They played an awesome game."Finally, Thera Hibbler struck gold and evened the game for Lehighton with 16:50 left in regulation. Hibbler cleaned up one of Yurasits's many corners after it got knocked around on the ground in front of the net. She also fired a pair of rockets in the second half, one from around 35 yards which barley missed the opposite upper-90. Hibbler was an obvious difference-maker for the Indians."She brings the calm and cool to the team," explained Emmert. "She is literally looking ahead, not playing ahead. She's always thinking ahead and her head was in the game today."Condly anticipated the late Lehighton surge in regulation, but was happy with his team's push in the in the pair of extra periods. It was the Olympians who kicked it into high gear in the second overtime, as Jim Thorpe rallied for two corners and a free kick within the final three minutes of play - but ultimately came up empty."You could see it coming toward the end of the (second) half," said Condly. "Then, we got the pressure at the end and you kind of had the feeling this was going to be a draw. These programs are hurting with injuries and youth, but we always have a good game with Lehighton every year."It's a stepping stone and we have a positive outlook. It's been a rough season, but the girls have stayed positive and we're getting better every day. We're going to progress, it just takes some time."GREAT GOALIES ... Both goalies came up big for their respective teams during the low-scoring affair. Lehighton's Julia Frey and Jim Thorpe's Monae Bullock each tallied a dozen saves during the draw. It's only been a few weeks for Bullock between the posts, but her strong play caught the attention of both coaches. "It was only her fifth game in the goal," Condly said. "She's actually a striker, but we had a lot of injuries so she's filling in and she's done a great job. She can handle it athletically and she's absolutely got the ability."EXTRA INCENTIVE ... Emmert explained with a grin that he always wanted to earn a win over Jim Thorpe, his alma-mater.NEVER HAVE I EVER ... Condly, in his fifth year as the Olympians' coach, mentioned that this was the first draw he's ever been involved in.
