Mahoning Township received one bid for the Rex Road Bridge project. It was more than double the original cost estimate made by the township engineer.

Supervisor Bruce Steigerwalt told board the engineer had originally estimated $38,000 to construct the concrete deck."We added in the cost for guardrails and I increased the numbers up to $68,000. The only bid we got they wanted $277,485. They wanted $35,000 just to mobilize," Steigerwalt said.The board voted to send a letter to Carbon County rejecting the single bid received for the bridge work.Center Road was also on the list for grant-funded repairs but the board voted to organized back up options to keep the momentum of the countywide Community Development Block Grant going."We still have not qualified Center Road. There are three homes vacant we can write off. There are still six to seven people who have not filed the income survey. We've got to get this qualified and get people to fill out those income surveys," Steigerwalt said.To use the grant, the township must serve an area with a low to moderate income."We need to qualify the road quickly. If we don't get it qualified it's going to hold up the whole project for Carbon County. We may have to do another project to make sure we qualify," Steigerwalt said.The board considered Pine and Packerton roads as backups."That's fine and we could add Douglas and Chestnut," Steigerwalt said."We had that water damage on Pine," Ruch said."The other option is Orioles Drive from Hemlock up. It's all dirt," Steigerwalt said."We are making this motion because we don't have enough income surveys to do Center. That's why we are picking new projects," Ruch said.The supervisors voted to send the township engineer to check on the status of the suggested roads.
