Three people were slightly injured Monday afternoon in a crash between a school bus and a car along Route 309 in West Penn Township.
The crash occurred just after 3 p.m. as the bus was traveling south on Route 309 and stopped in the turning lane to make a left turn onto School Road.The bus was en route to the West Penn Elementary School.A car being driven by a Tamaqua man home from work traveling north entered the turning lane, striking the bus on the left front corner.The driver told police he looked down to take a cold drink from a cooler and apparently drifted to the left into the bus.There were no students on the bus.Stephen Toth, assistant superintendent of the Tamaqua Area School District checked on the driver and monitor, then stayed at West Penn until all students were picked up.Two adults on the bus and the operator of the car were transported to an area hospital for evaluation. West Penn fire police maintained traffic control at the scene.The bus is owned by Kistler Transportation and is contracted out to the Tamaqua Area School District.West Penn Police officer Denna Krammes is investigating the incident.
