Woman gets year in jail for retail theft

A Carbon County woman was sentenced to a year less a day in the county prison and up to two years, less a day, on a retail theft charge.

Judge Steven R. Serfass sentenced Shelly Lynn Filer, 45, of Palmerton to the state correctional institution term on Tuesday. She previously pleaded to the charge.Filer was charged by Palmerton police for an incident at the Rite Aid pharmacy on Delaware Avenue where she took $58.45 worth of merchandise on April 1. Because of prior retail theft convictions the charge was rated a felony three.She was also ordered to supply a DNA sample, get both comprehensive drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations, pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee. She was given credit for time spent in prison from May 18.
