Police release name of Lehighton man killed in Berks crash

Police in Berks County have released more details about a crash which killed a local motorcyclist and seriously injured his passenger on Sunday.

The driver of the other vehicle involved in the wreck reportedly made an illegal U-turn just before the crash, but police say they have not determined whether it was the ultimate cause.

53-year-old Dean Steigerwalt of Lehighton was killed in the crash, which occurred on Route 61 in Tilden Township, Berks County. His passenger, a 52-year-old woman who is also from Lehighton, was seriously injured. Police have not released her name.

The crash occurred around 2:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes of 61, when Steigerwalt's Harley-Davidson struck the rear of a Toyota minivan, according to a press release from Tilden Township Police.

Police said that just prior to the collision, the minivan's driver had made a U-turn across the concrete median of Route 61 from the southbound to northbound lanes. But they have not concluded whether the U-turn was the primary cause for the crash, according to the press release.

Steigerwailt was pronounced dead at the scene by an official with the Berks County Coroner's office. His passenger was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital with serious injuries. Police have not said whether the riders were wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

The driver of the minivan, identified as Ursual Pohl, 82, of Flemington, N.J., was not injured in the crash.

Police say that they expect to release more information about the case as the investigation progresses. They are still asking anyone who witnessed the crash to call the Tilden Township Police Department at 610-562-9001.
