Panthers, Bears, Tigers win titles

Panther Valley and Pleasant Valley won tournament championships in volleyball, and Northwestern captured a tourney title in boys soccer, to highlight weekend sports action.

VOLLEYBALLPanther Valley, Weatherly at North Schuylkill TournamentPanther Valley rolled to the championship of the North Schuylkill Tournament.The Panthers swept through pool play with an undefeated record, beating Minersville, 25-15, 25-16; Weatherly, 25-12, 25-7; and North Schuylkill 25-23, 25-4. In the knockout round of the tourney, PV defeated Millersburg, 25-14, in the semifinals and Minersville, 26-24, in the championship match.The Panthers had numerous outstanding individual performances in the tourney. Danielle Hudicka did a little bit of everything as she had 10 kills, 30 assists, 43 service points and 24 aces. Rachelle Filer led the way at the net with 18 kills and 13 blocks. She also added 12 service points and fours aces. Also playing well were Chloe Markovich (13 kills, two blocks, 10 service points); Emilee Kwake (nine kills, 10 digs, 22 service point, 12 aces); Jenna Dubisky (nine kills, four blocks, 23 service points); Christina Dacey (15 kills, 29 assists); and Sydney Clouser (71 digs).Pleasant Valleyat Pocono Classic TournamentPleasant Valley captured the Pocono Classic Volleyball Tournament over the weekend, going unbeaten through the round robing section, along with two splits. Mount Olive finished in second behind the tournament hosts.The Lady Bears picked up wins over Bonner/Pendergrast 25-15, 25-18, Stroudsburg 25-2, 25-14, East Stroudsburg North 25-9, 25-11 and Easton 25-18, 25-11. Against Wyalusing (26-28, 25-21), and Mount Olive (25-23, 23-25), the locals managed split decisions.Individually, Noel Kelly amassed 36 kills, 19 digs and 15 aces on the day, Sara Kron followed with 34 kills, 10 blocks and three aces, while Renee Mapa added 14 kills and 16 blocks. Cameron Caffrey totalled 61 assists and 17 digs, while Andrea Janak had 41 assists and 15 digs. Sofia Janak also collected 27 digs for the well-rounded effort.Marian atGarden Spot TournamentMarian went against some of the top big school teams in the state, compiling a 1-7 mark against Allentown Central Catholic, Hempfield, Palmyra and Cumberland Valley in the Garden Spot tournament.Jasmine Mooney led the Fillies in both kills and digs with 17 apiece. She also had four aces. Also playing well for the Fillies were Gianna Agosti (23 assists, five digs) and Miranda Antiga (12 digs, seven kills, four aces).Jim Thorpe-Williams ValleyJim Thorpe swept Williams Valley 25-11, 25-20, 25-14 in non-league action.The three-set win was aided in part by Kelsey Carroll's 16-point service run in the third. Carroll finished with 21 assists and eight aces for the Lady Olympians. Jillian Peterson tallied 10 kills and two blocks, while Emma Dunbar had 11 digs and Jordan Waselus six kills.BOYS SOCCERSchuylkill Haven-Jim ThorpeJim Thorpe defeated Schuylkill Haven, 3-1, in a non-league match.Cody Geiser, Ryder Wallace and Jake Burkhart had goals for the Olympians, who improve to 2-1 on the season.Whitehall-LehightonWhitehall pulled away from Lehighton to claim a 5-2 non-league win.Zeka Elkhyati scored on an assist from Frank Bokan to tie the game at 2-2 early in the second half, but the Zephyrs responded with three unanswered goals to secure the win. Bokan scored on an assist from Bryce Smith to give Lehighton a 1-0 lead in the first half.NDES-Northern LehighNorthern Lehigh made two first-half goals stand up to top Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg 2-0 in Colonial League play.Dan Belfonti put the Bulldogs on the board early in the first half on an assist from Anthony Evangelist. Evangelist scored Northern Lehigh's second goal unassisted before halftime.Northwesternat Hamburg TournamentNorthwestern posted a pair of shutouts on its way to the championship of the Taylor M. Seitzinger Tournament in Hamburg.The Tigers beat Wyomissing 2-0 in the semifinals and followed that up with a 3-0 win over host Hamburg in the finals.Kyle Bellhorn recorded a pair of shutouts in goal for Northwestern.In the title game, Kenneth Gawelko had a hat trick to account for all the Tiger scoring.Pine Grove-PalmertonPine Grove edged Palmerton 3-2 in non-league play.Rio Kapur had both of the Blue Bombers' goals, while Mac Allen tallied an assist. Ryan Yacone made 12 saves for Palmerton, which trailed 2-1 at halftime.CB East-Pleasant ValleyBrenden Leadoff's first half goal was enough to give Central Bucks East a 1-0 non-league win over Pleasant Valley.Ian Prator made 10 saves for the Bears.Tamaqua-CatasauquaCatasauqua rolled to a 5-1 non-league triumph over Tamaqua.Logan Miller scored for the Blue Raiders, who trailed 2-1 at the intermission. Ty Kistler made 11 saves for Tamaqua.Weatherly-MMI PrepFreeland MMI defeated Weatherly, 3-1, in a non-league match.Paul Eckert scored the lone goal for the Wreckers (1-2).FIELD HOCKEYNorthampton-LehightonNorthampton handed Lehighton its first loss of the season with a 5-2 setback.Lauren Marks scored on an assist from McKenzie Hoats to give the Indians (3-1) a 1-0 lead, but the K-Kids rallied for three goals before the end of the first half to take control. Covart also assisted on Brianna Clark's tally. Carmen Gonzales/Allison Miller 6-0, 6-0.CROSS COUNTRYNo. Lehigh, Palmerton, Tamaqua, Northwestern at DeSales InvitationalNorthwestern's Molly Tarvin's seventh place finish in the girls race was the best showing by an area runner at the DeSales Invitational.Tarvin (20:48) was just ahead of teammate Madeline Consuelos (20:55), who placed ninth, and Tamaqua's Sarah Maue (21:08), who finished 12th.Other area girls runners who cracked the 50 mark in the 17-team field were Tamaqua's Kailee Carroll (29th, 21:51) and Nicole Wasserleben (50th, 23:04) and Northwestern's Hannah Herzon (46th, 22:54) and Alyssa Zack (48th, 22:59),Northwestern finished seventh in the team standings while Tamaqua was 11th.Four area schools competed in the 20-team boys field.Northwestern had the best showing by a team and an individual. The Tigers were 10th in the standings and had two runners in the 50. Robert Leiser was the top area boy with a 21st place finish in a time of 17:52. Tiger teammate Phillip Castrine was 36th with a time of 18:22.Tamaqua finished 13th overall and was led by Brad Clemson, who finished 39th in 18:33.Northern Lehigh was 17th in the boys standings and Palmerton finished 20th.Leading the Bulldogs with a 79th place finish was Preston Kemery (20:05). while Jacob Martinez (19:20) paced the Bombers with a 62nd place finish.MIDDLE SCHOOLCross CountryTamaqua at DeSales Invit.Francis Kabana (fourth) and Grace Stegemerten (seventh) led the Tamaqua girls to a fourth place result in the middle school team standings at the DeSales Invitational.Dominic Shemwell was 33rd in the middle school race for the Tamaqua boys.
