Annual Palmerton festival unites community

Many people spent this weekend enjoying the free entertainment, delicious food and fun rides and games at the 27th annual Palmerton Community Festival.

The festival is a great place for free weekend fun. Popular bands such as the Large Flower Heads, the One Night Stand Band, Georgette Jones and the Pennsylvania Villagers played for the community throughout the weekend. The One Night Stand Band performed Saturday after being rained out last year. A lot of the band’s followers came out to see them play and entertain.“There is no chance of rain today! We have a great day,” said Lenny Green, the band’s lead singer. “If they’re having fun, we’re having fun.”The band entertained the crowd with upbeat country, both old and new. The band played songs like Merle Haggard’s “Working Man Blues” and “Some Beach” by Blake Shelton. The Mahoney Brothers performed on Saturday night to a large crowd, who sang along to the classic songs like “Sweet Caroline” and “Hand Jive.”The festival was filled with vendors serving many varieties of food and drink for purchase. Pork and sauerkraut, a classic bloomin’ onion, funnel cake, strawberry shortcake, elephant ears and Caribbean noodles were all for purchase in the Palmerton park this weekend. The popular Trachsville happy bowl, courtesy of the Jerusalem United Church of Christ, is only available at the Palmerton Community Festival. Preparation takes several days and a lot of volunteers. Each year they sell out of their Pennsylvania Dutch potato filling and chicken barbecue.Festival patrons also enjoyed rides and games throughout the weekend. Favorite rides included the Ferris wheel, the slide, octopus and the scrambler. Children had the chance to ride their own motorcycle in a festival ride as well.
