7 gunshots hit Mercedes in Easton after owner assaulted, police say
A black Mercedes was hit by seven gunshots just before 6:30 a.m. Sunday in the 1000 block of Church Street in Easton, city police said.
The shooting followed by several hours an assault on the car's owner either inside or outside a Centre Square bar, police Lt. Matthew Gerould said. No one was hurt in the shooting, he said. While an officer was talking to the victim -- who was was shirtless about 6:45 a.m., wearing white pants stained by apparent drops of blood and holding a white cloth that also appeared blood spattered -- the officer said, "We know what happened last night."A dark vehicle -- possibly a gray van -- was seen fleeing the area after the 6:27 a.m. shooting, Gerould said. The gunfire happened in an alley behind the 1000 block of Northampton Street, just west of the first block of North Warren Street and less than a block from Cottingham Stadium. The Mercedes is registered to an address in the 1000 block of Northampton, Gerould said. The assault victim and the person who had been driving the Mercedes have been uncooperative with police, Gerould said. The initial incident happened about 1:45
a.m.in or near Drinkys bar on Centre Square, Gerould said. The assault victim was treated at an area hospital, Gerould added.Evidence of a shooting was collected on Church Street, Gerould said, and the Mercedes had seven bullet holes. No weapon was recovered, he said.MORE: Where is suspect in triple-fatal crash?Due to lack of cooperation, it's too early to say what sparked the two incidents of violence, Gerould said. No one is in custody, he added. While the early summer had several incidents of gunfire, recent weeks have been quieter in the city.Neighbors, sitting on their porches on North Warren and watching police work, all said they didn't hear or see anything. One neighbor said she heard gunfire, but said nothing else.If anyone has any information on the shooting, they are asked to call city detectives at 610-250-6656 or the department's anonymous tipline at 610-250-6635.Tony Rhodin may be reached at arhodin
