Lehighton rides big second half to win over SV
LEESPORT - Resiliency. It's a characteristic athletes needs to possess in order to overcome setbacks and get back on the right track.
Despite the slim 20-14 advantage at halftime, Lehighton head coach Tom McCarroll knew there were things that his team did in the first half that needed to be corrected. The Tribe managed to do exactly that in the third and fourth quarters to pull away from Schuylkill Valley for a 33-14 win and improve to 2-1 on the season."Penalties and turnovers can kill a team and we're well aware of that," McCarroll said. "But, when you're facing adversity, your team has got to be able to handle it. Our guys are resilient and when the time came, they stepped up and made plays."Senior running back Mike Mayernik and junior quarterback Cody Scherer continued to shred defenses as they produced noteworthy numbers again. Mayernik, who scored three rushing touchdowns, produced 197 yards on the ground. Scherer rushed 12 times for 116 yards and completed 16 of 34 passing attempts for 235 yards. He tossed a TD pass to Matt Strubinger and added an 80-yard sprint to the end zone as well."Those two guys have been doing well so far and our offense has been clicking for us. We have a ton of confidence in our offense," McCarroll said. "We moved the ball pretty well offensively and even though we're not where we want to be defensively, we are getting better."The defense is what prevailed for the winners in the second half as they kept the hosts off the scoreboard. On Schuylkill Valley's seven second-half possessions, the Indians forced them into two punts, a turnover on downs, a fumble, an interception and a missed field goal.Midway through the first frame, the Tribe got on the board as Mayernik broke loose for a 32-yard TD. However, the hosts responded immediately with a scoring drive of their own that spanned 65 yards in five plays that ended with Nathan Braucher hauling in a 13-yard pass from Justin Nawrocki for a 7-7 tie.The Indians needed two plays for Scherer to outrun defenders and find daylight for his 80-yard scamper. Instead of slowing, the Panthers took the following possession and on the first play from scrimmage, Braucher raced 63 yards to tie it up again.Things remained that way until midway through the second quarter, when the winners took the lead for good. Mayernik did a majority of the damage as he finished off the go-ahead drive with an eight-yard scoring run.The scoring then slowed until the fourth when Strubinger hit paydirt on a pass from Scherer and Mayernik added his third TD to round out the scoring.DOWN THE ROAD … With both teams coming off big wins and sporting 2-1 records, the Tribe travels to Marian next week for a showdown with the Colts. "They're very well-coached and we're going to have to play much better in order to compete with them."TAKING OFFENSE … The Indians offense put in another brilliant installment in week three as the team's total offense compiled an astounding 562 yards. Between Scherer, Mayernik, Strubinger and a pow wow full of capable receivers, they are proving tough to stop.CLEANING UP … McCarroll credited his team's discipline with their ability to change their outlook from the first half to the second. Ten first-half penalties amassed 80 yards, compared to none in the second, while their two first-half fumbles were limited to one in the second half.
