BEATING THE HEAT Music lovers relax to cool music, producer to step down

Music fans in Tamaqua cooled down Thursday evening listening to soft melodies and favorite tunes.

But there also was a sense of change in the air and it wasn’t simply the first hints of fall foliage beginning to turn colors. It was the realization the producer is stepping down after the season finale of Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce Summer Concert Series, now completing its tenth year.“This will be my last season,” said Jack Kulp of Tamaqua, explaining that a busy schedule precludes him from continuing to coordinate the event.Like the musical groups he brings to Tamaqua, Kulp also is part of various performing ensembles and has a busy schedule.“Sterling (Koch) and I are doing so much that I can’t devote the appropriate time to do it,” he said. But the concerts will not end. Kulp said somebody else will step in and maintain the momentum. That was good news to those on hand, because they expressed rave reviews of the concerts, sponsored this week by Air Products and Chemicals, which has locations in the Lehigh Valley and Tamaqua.“To have a full audience right here on the front lawn is special,” said Melanie Ross, owner of the Train Station Restaurant inside Tamaqua’s 1874 Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Passenger Depot.Attendees said the Thursday night concerts are an important part of their summer routine.“It’s very enjoyable, always a relaxing time,” said Edie Moyer of Tamaqua, joined by her sister, Louise Howells. “You couldn’t get anything better; it’s live music and just wonderful.”The featured group was the Brosky-Meyer Duo, offering a blues-and-Americana fare that showcased the talent of Steve Brosky and Jimmy Meyer, both of the Lehigh Valley. To the surprise of listeners, the duo became a trio when hometown-favorite Kulp lent his musical gifts midway through the first set.The performers said their annual visit to Schuylkill County is special for them.“I used to come here in the 1970s to a place called Took One’s,” said Brosky, referring to a wildly popular Mauch Chunk Street bar and nightspot of the 1960s and 70s.“It was the place to go on a Sunday. It was one of the first to open on Sundays, which was allowed because they served food.”Brosky and Meyer said they enjoy coal region folks.“We don’t play any other place like this, it’s unique. It’s nice coming up here. They always welcome us,” said Meyer.Other sponsors include: Schuylkill County Visitors Bureau, Cal’s Tire & Auto Service, Mamma C’s Bakery, The Strawberry Playhouse, 12 Volt Daves Audio, Tamaqua Accounting and Tax Associates, Williamson Friedberg & Jones LLC and Mauch Chunk Trust Company.Ross already is looking forward to next year and a similar schedule of excitement provided by the Tamaqua Chamber.“It’s a great community event and it’s free,” she said.
