Tigers offense in high gear
Northwestern might have graduated the best goal-scorer in the history of its soccer program, but this year's team is eager to show that it will have just as much offensive firepower as last year's state playoff team.
The Tigers got goals from five different players in a 9-0 win over Palmerton Tuesday."I thought all things considered, we played pretty well," said Northwestern head coach Nate Hunsicker. "The first half, our finishing definitely wasn't where it needed to be. Fortunately for us, we had the lion's share of the possession, which led to ample chances. That's not going to be the case every day, so we have to up our percentage a little bit and capitalize on our opportunities."The Tigers (2-0 overall, 1-0 Colonial League) had 16 first-half shots and built a 4-0 lead by halftime.Noah Seng-DeLong got the Tigers on the board with 32:47 left in first half. The senior forward played a through ball from Creighton Thomas and had a one-on-one shot against Palmerton goalkeeper Ryan Yacone.Caleb Danner made it 2-0 when Yacone saved his first attempt before the Tiger sophomore gathered the rebound and sent it into the net.Seng-DeLong added a second goal, assisted by Kenny Gawelko, with 15:46 left in the first half. Gawelko capped the first-half scoring with 7:02 left on an assist from Sam Seyfried. While the Tigers graduated prolific scorer JD Haaf, who had 46 goals last season and 79 for his career, this year's team might be even more dangerous with several players who can find the back of the net."JD's dominance last year was obviously a huge help to the team," said Seng-DeLong. "All of us are hungry to prove we still have the scoring potential that we did last year, even without someone who is just waltzing by defenders like JD. We're all hungry to step into those roles and collectively share in the goal-scoring front. We're looking to prove we haven't lost as much as people think we lost.""This year," said senior defender Jon Baline, "it's going to work to our advantage that we don't just have one guy scoring goals."The Tigers got five second-half goals from four different players. Danner scored his second of the game and Andrew Goodolf connected for two while assisting on a Seyfried goal. Gawelko also scored his second of the game, assisted by Brad Shafer, who had two assists in the second half. Zachary Creighton had one second-half assist. For Palmerton (1-1, 0-1), it was a tough way to start the Colonial League season. The Tigers are defending district and league champs. They made a run to last year's state semifinal and have many key players returning."This is a team we want to try and model ourselves after to be able to possess the ball and move the ball," said Blue Bomber head coach Ryan Sharkazy. "I think we got away from some of the things we were trying to accomplish today. Hopefully we learn from this and get better from it."TOUGH TIGER DEFENSE ... Tiger goal keeper Kyle Belhorn has not given up a goal in two games this season. Northwestern allowed just seven goals all of last season. He faced just four shots against Palmerton.BOMBARDMENT ... The Tigers pelted the Blue Bomber net with 27 shots in the game. They came up empty on all eight corner plays. Palmerton had no corners and just four shots as Northwestern dominated possession.STREAKERS ON THE PITCH ... The Tigers extended their Colonial League regular season win streak to 15 games. They went 12-0 in league play last year and haven't lost to a league opponent during the regular season since a 3-2 setback to Palisades on Oct. 1, 2014.
