Tamaqua ready for Haven

What's better?

A fast start or a strong finish?Tamaqua and Schuylkill Haven are both undefeated and are featured in this week's Times News Game of the Week. Both teams have been scoring points at opposite ends of the spectrum.Tamaqua has roared out of the opening whistle of both games this season. The Raiders poured on 35 first-half points against Minersville in the opening week, when its season started off with Nick Breiner's opening kickoff return for a touchdown. That trend continued in Week 2 when Tamaqua lit up Mahanoy Area for 28 points in the first quarter."We always seemed to get off to a slow start in the past," said Tamaqua head coach Sam Bonner. "I think we're showing a little bit of the opposite. Nick (Breiner) got us off to a quick start with a kickoff return in Week 1. And last week, we came down and scored seven right away. We were clicking on all cylinders offensively."A big part of Tamaqua's quick starts on offense can been attributed from the diversity of its personnel.Quarterback Thad Zuber and the passing game have completed 66 percent of its passes (20-for-30), while the rushing attack has produced 6.7-yards-per-carry across the opening two games."He's another kid that we are expecting a lot more from him this year after having 10 starts last year and improving as it went on," Bonner said of Zuber. "Being able to complete the ball the way he has, and having a few nice targets, can hopefully make us have a little more of a vertical threat. Obviously, Nick (Breiner) is a big part of our offense and he will grind it out when we need to."Bonner's club has been well in control in each of its two contests by halftime this season. While the Raiders have outscored their opponents by a 70-14 margin in the first half, their second unit has scored only 14 second-half points this season.Schuylkill Haven, on the other hand, has been playing by a different script so far.The Hurricanes led Jim Thorpe by five points at halftime during the opening weekend. They went on to outscore the Olympians by a 19-7 margin in the second half to pull away. In Week 2, it seemed that Lehighton had Haven wrapped up after a 14-0 halftime lead. However, the Hurricanes took control of the line of scrimmage and outscored the Tribe by a 27-6 tally in the final two frames to complete a monstrous comeback on the road."We have to make them drive a long field and we can't give up any big plays," the Tamaqua coach explained. "We have to make them work for the yardage that they get. They're quick on the outside and we have to try and keep stuff inside the box."Haven's offensive line put on a clinic in the second half last week that led to its skill players finding terrain to make explosive plays. Quarterback Danny Lozada scrambled for 65 yards on the second play from scrimmage after intermission, while Mike Kalyan ran 42 yards through a gaping hole in the final period to seal the deal. The Hurricanes are notorious for pounding the football and they won't shy away from their game plan regardless of the score. Haven has thrown the ball just eight times this year, while piling up 95 rushing attempts. Each team will have to play four complete quarters to remain undefeated after this battle of Schuylkill Football League heavyweights."They're physical," stated Bonner. "We're not going to run the ball on first, second, and third downs and expect to move the ball. We're going to have to mix it up and hit that short passing game, while being able to stretch the field. They just beat two quality teams in Lehighton and Jim Thorpe. We want to show them what we got, and it should be a good gauge to see where we're at after Week 3."
