JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey judge on Wednesday modified the bail set for a Pennsylvania man arrested when he and two other people tried to drive into New York City with a cache of weapons earlier this year.

John Cramsey’s bail was set at $75,000 cash after his arrest in June, and previous attempts to lower that amount had failed. But the judge changed Cramsey’s bail to $175,000 cash, with the option of posting 10 percent.Supporters who attended the court hearing and cheered when the ruling was announced said they planned to post the $17,500 needed to have Cramsey freed by Wednesday night. But it wasn’t immediately known if they were successful.Even if Cramsey makes bail, he will have to return to New Jersey next week for a grand jury proceeding.Cramsey, 50, of Zionsville, and his co-defendants — Dean Smith, also of Zionsville, and Kimberly Arendt, of Lehighton — have pleaded not guilty to weapons charges. Bail remains at $75,000 for Smith and Arendt, who have unsuccessfully sought to have those amounts reduced or modified.The three were arrested as they prepared to enter the Holland Tunnel in a truck carrying weapons, including a semi-automatic military-style rifle, a shotgun and five handguns. Their attorneys have said the police search was illegal.Cramsey, whose daughter died of a heroin overdose in February, had posted online shortly before the arrest that he was heading to New York to “rescue” a 16-year-old girl whose friend had overdosed.
