Tamaqua schools were on lockdown this morning because of police activity in the area of Spruce and Cherry streets.
Police say a heavyset black man wearing a mask fired a shot at a man in the area at around 8:15 this morning.
Tamaqua police and all surrounding departments were searching for the man who ran north on Cherry Street.
The incident was reported by a neighbor who witnessed the scene. The caller said the two men had been arguing when the masked man pulled out a gun and fired a shot. No injuries were reported.
The man has not been located, but the active search was called off at 9:50 a.m.
Children at a bus stop around a block away had been picked up moments before the shooting.
The magistrate's office in town was also on lockdown.
