Woman tried to smuggle drugs to patient

A Carbon County woman who took a bag of illegal drugs to a county hospital and attempted to have them delivered to a patient, entered a guilty plea on Thursday to a charge related to the incident.

Amber Colleen Defiore, 23, of Lehighton, pleaded to one count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance before Judge Steven R. Serfass.She was arrested for an incident on April 2, 2015, at the Lehighton hospital. Defiore went to the second floor mental health unit and gave a bag to the nurse on duty to give to one of the patients. The nurse was suspicious of the package and called police.Borough police arrived and checked the bag. Various drug items including crystal methamphetamine and syringes were found.Police reviewed the security video at the hospital and through an investigation determined that Defiore was the person who delivered the bag of drugs.Defiore is currently an inmate in the county prison serving a sentence on other criminal charges. She has had numerous criminal counts filed against her over the past year. Her defense counsel, Gregory L. Mousseau of the public defender's office, said this is the last case pending against her in Carbon County.He asked Serfass to deferred sentencing. Serfass granted the request.
