Seniors deliver for Thorpe
A tennis roster with four seniors is a nice luxury to have.
Jim Thorpe is enjoying the benefits of that luxury this season. The Lady Olympians are off to an outstanding start to the season and that continued on Wednesday against Pocono Mountain West.Three of those seniors comprise the singles line-up for Jim Thorpe and all of them needed to earn wins in order to pull out a 3-2 win over the Panthers.Caitlin Holt's win at No. 3 singles was by far the most exciting of the day as she posted a come-from-behind win to preserve the team victory.Down a set and trailing 4-5 in the second, Holt played some inspired tennis to prevail in the next nine consecutive games and rally for a 1-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory."The pressure definitely helps sometimes," Holt said. "Because, if you tell yourself, inside, that you want to win, you'll do it. Being a senior and having that experience from previous years definitely helped me through it."Teammates and classmates, Brittney Marzen and Marni Quevedo both earned wins in their first and second singles matches to set up the late-match heroics. Marzen only relinquished two games in her match, while Quevedo gave up three, helping the Olympians to one of their best starts in recent history."Everything that we work on in practice was really working today," Quevedo said about her 6-0, 6-3 victory. "The first set, I played well but then in the second the nerves kind of got to me a little bit."Meanwhile, Marzen was more than happy to be a part of Jim Thorpe's success as she cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory."We have a lot of new girls in the program this year," said Marzen. "So, as seniors, we really need to set an example. All of the girls are really great and supportive which helps bring the pressure down a little bit, too."Pocono Mountain West (0-6), took both doubles matches to make things quite interesting in the late stages of the match. Sporting the winless record is slightly deceiving as the Panthers' schedule up to this point has included Allentown Central Catholic, Parkland, Emmaus and several other strong programs from the EPC."Our doubles players played really well today," Pocono Mountain West head coach Pete Febbraro said. "Also, the girls really got a chance to see what they need to do in order to win because we were so close in a few of those matches and I'm proud of their effort against a good team like Jim Thorpe."Jim Thorpe coach Norb Lienhard was relieved and happy after the win."Those four seniors are the heart of the team," Leinhard said. "This is a great transition year with those four seniors and the experience and leadership that they bring. But also having these younger girls that are new to the team being able to learn from those seniors is great."HOLA, SENIOR! ... Jim Thorpe wasn't the only team involved in the match with seniors aplenty as the Panthers have five in their lineup. Along with Marzen, Quevedo, and Holt, the other senior on the Lady Olympians squad is No. 2 doubles player Ellana Adames, who pairs up with freshman Kaitlyn O'Neil.BACK ON TRACK ...
