Weissport prepares for its annual Redneck Festival

Calling all hillbillies and bumpkins!

It's that time of year where redneck is the word of the day, and visitors can act, celebrate and enjoy everything redneck.Sponsored by the Weissport Recreation Committee, the ninth annual Weissport Redneck Festival will be held Labor Day weekend in the borough park.The festival will run from 5-10 p.m. Friday and from noon to 9 or 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the borough park.Thanks to a wide array of contests, food and craft vendors, the event has something for everyone, events coordinator Duane Dellecker said."We're very excited about the Redneck Festival and what it has to offer and what it brings to the community," Dellecker said.Festivities begin Friday with live entertainment from The Redneck Karaoke Entertainer, with special guests The Hawks. There will also be a Big Redneck Chinese Auction.Saturday will showcase various contests, such as the Zimmie's & Hot Wings Eating Cook-off; Rednecks Got Talent II; Ugliest Pickup Truck Contest; Korniest Couple Contest; The Junkman's Contest; I Luv My Mummy Contest; Mr. Redneck Contest, and Daisy Duke Contest. Entertainment will be provided by way of Banned From the Ranch country rock from 5:30-10 p.m.Sunday will feature more contests, including the Bedknobs & Rednecks Bed Race; Watermelon Eating Contest; Big Wheel Contest; Chariot Race; Honey Dipper Contest; Wild-N-Wacky Wheelbarrow Race; Tug-A-War; Big Redneck Chinese Auction; and Best Rack Contest. Entertainment will be provided by the Country Rhythm Band from 5-9:30 p.m.There will also be kiddie ride specials from 5-9 p.m. Friday ($15); noon to 2 p.m. Saturday ($12); and 7-9 p.m. Sunday ($12).The festival will be held rain or shine. No pets are allowed, except for service animals.Dellecker encouraged visitors to take a moment to talk to volunteers or staff at the festival to give the committee new ideas "for different things to do that would be fun, entertaining and generate interest from the public.""It's the events themselves that make this festival unique," he said. "And that's what we would invite everybody to do; when they get there, grab a brochure, sign up, and have a little bit of redneck fun with the rest of us."
