Jim Thorpe PD donates to Turn To Us

A local nonprofit organization got a significant financial boost Thursday thanks to the Jim Thorpe Police Department.

Police Chief Joe Schatz handed over a $3,000 check to Turn To Us, which connects individuals impacted by major or chronic illnesses and their families to available resources in the community. The money comes from proceeds of the department’s eighth annual policeman’s ball, held earlier this year at Jim Thorpe Memorial Hall.A different local organization is the recipient of the fund each year.“Turn To Us is a local group who gives back a lot to our community and we’re proud to be able to help them out,” Schatz said.In its first full year, Turn To Us assisted 94 clients and their families.Among the services it offers is illness specific help currently available through national organizations, local foundations, and local trust funds; free, donated clothes from Operation School Wear; connecting individuals who need to travel far for treatment with Patient Airlift Services, which offers free flights; and providing gas gift cards for traveling back and forth to treatment.Executive Director Alicia Kline and intern Skylar Eidem were on hand Thursday to accept the check.“This money is program changing,” Kline said. “It’s going to allow us to expand and hopefully provide more services for our community and clients.”
