Nesquehoning discusses issues with trash service

Nesquehoning officials are talking trash.

The borough has been fielding numerous complaints from residents over the trash cans not being placed back on the curb after the garbage is picked up by Tamaqua Transfer. On Wednesday, councilwoman Mary Fox again approached council about what can be done about the garbage men not following the contract that requires the cans to be placed and not thrown back onto the curb. She also passed around a photo that a resident sent her of cans thrown down Mill Street.Borough officials have called Tamaqua Transfer and sent letters regarding the ongoing issue, but nothing has been resolved to date, they said."How do we resolve this?" Fox asked.Council President David Hawk said maybe the borough has to withhold payment for the service until the problem is resolved.Council said it would extend an invitation to Larry Wittig of Tamaqua Transfer to attend council's next workshop, scheduled for 6 p.m. on Sept. 14.Nesquehoning formerly operated its own sanitation department but decided to outsource it after costs continued to rise.In October 2014, Tamaqua Transfer took over the operations under a $1.4 million five-year contract.
