Sheriff's office keeps fairgrounds safe for attendees

At an event as big and boisterous as the West End Fair, security is always a concern for the average attendee. Rest assured, though, that the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has everything under control.

“So far, everything’s been going well,” Sheriff Todd Martin said. “It’s been great, knock on wood.”While private security has been handling the job during daytime hours, Martin and company handle any issues from 6 p.m. through closing, in addition to day shifts on Saturday. The deputies have been taking shifts at the fair after their normal daytime positions, with a contract negotiated between the Monroe County Commissioners and the West End Fair Association.“It’s been a hectic and long week for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office,” Martin said.Though he reports that the festivities have been relatively crime free, the occasional missing child will always stir up some panic. Luckily, the sheriffs are on the ball.“We’ve had a lot of lost kids,” Martin said. “But within five to 10 minutes, we’ve found the kids and reunited them with their parents.”Part of the reason for the efficiency and effectiveness of the department’s operation lies with their interaction with the local community.“We have a very good rapport with the West Enders,” Martin said.Of course, Martin’s experience and presence at the event have contributed greatly to the success as well.“I’ve been at the Sheriff’s Office going on 34 years now, and I’ve been out there every year,” he said. The sheriff is quick to point out that no matter what, precautions for safety at the fair should always be employed.“Always make sure to make yourself aware of your surroundings,” Martin said. “Know where you park your car, and never leave valuables on your seat. Someone may try to bust in your window.”So even if something does come up at the fairgrounds, you can count on Martin and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office to take care of business.“That’s what we’re all there for, to help,” he said. The West End Fair, located off Route 209 in Gilbert, continues through Saturday from noon to 10 p.m. Admission is $5, with children under 11 admitted free.
