Police dog killed on duty near Pittsburgh gets courage award

PITTSBURGH (AP) - A Pittsburgh-area police dog that was stabbed to death in January is being honored by the American Kennel Club.

The New York-based organization announced German shepherd Aren is among the second round of winners of the "AKC Paw of Courage" medal.Five-year-old Aren worked with the Port Authority of Allegheny County and was stabbed to death in Wilkinsburg when he reached suspects in a foot pursuit before officers.Aren had four years on the transit police force, and is among five K-9s being honored this week by the organization.Kennel Club Vice President Gina DiNardo says the dogs honored "continuously put their lives on the line without hesitation" and each "has made a significant sacrifice in the line of duty to protect us."The first round of medals was awarded in May.
