Nesquehoning still waiting for payment from trucking firms

Nesquehoning is looking for three trucking companies that caused emergencies in the borough over a three-day period earlier this year to pay the costs for the fire response.

On Wednesday, John McArdle, borough emergency management coordinator, said there has been no response to the bill sent to the three trucking companies involved in the tractor-trailer crashes coming off the Broad Mountain into Nesquehoning that occurred March 31, April 1 and 2.The bills are for $1,800, $1,325 and $2,400 for fire equipment and fire police used to assist in directing traffic during the three crashes.According to Nesquehoning's Emergency Abatement Vehicular Accident Ordinance, any person who causes an emergency situation will be responsible for all costs associated with the cleanup efforts and emergency response and labor costs for personnel, equipment, operation and towing. The three bills only cover the cost of fire response.McArdle said that in the initial bills sent, the deadline for a response from the companies is Friday. He asked council to approve allowing solicitor Robert Yurchak to send letters to the companies, and if necessary, seek legal action to obtain the money owed.Council passed the motion 5-0 with councilmen Don DeMarco and David DeMelfi absent.Last month, council received payment from Kritsak Trucking of Allentown for the rig crash at the routes 93-209 intersection last November after the borough authorized Yurchak to seek legal action against the company. A hearing never had to be held regarding the matter.
