NAZARETH (AP) - A prosecutor says the mayor of an eastern Pennsylvania borough facing charges he stole $8,000 from a fire company social club must resign from office if he wants to be recommended for a diversionary program.

Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli said Tuesday that Nazareth Mayor Carl Strye Jr.'s application for a first-time offender program would be endorsed by prosecutors if he paid restitution and resigned.Strye applied for a diversionary program last week that would allow him to avoid a criminal record in the case that accuses the 54-year-old of stealing money from Vigilance Hose Company's social club while serving as its president from 1987 to 2013.Strye didn't return messages seeking comment. His attorney couldn't immediately be reached.
