Polk Township supervisors have had a number of concerns regarding traffic in the area of the newly opened Dollar General on Route 209. During their regular monthly meeting on Monday evening the supervisors adopted a new ordinance which establishes a No Parking Zone along the shoulder of Route 209 in that area.

The ordinance makes it unlawful to "stop, stand or park" on the north side of the property occupied by the Dollar General Store or on the south side of the road from the intersection at Silver Spring Boulevard to the easterly line of the Dollar General property.A violation of the ordinance is a summary offense in accordance with the Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Code.Other businessThe supervisors also agreed to write a letter in support of the Polk Township Volunteer Fire Company for a Local Share Account grant application. If the grant is approved the funds will be used for new hoses and other equipment.The township is also applying for a $150,000 LSA grant for the replacement of the culvert on Hell Hollow Road.During the public comment period, township resident Joseph Horn addressed the supervisors about the potential wind turbine project which is being proposed for the Bethlehem Water Authority in Penn Forest Township.The project, which is currently before the Penn Forest Zoning Hearing Board, could result in37 turbines being constructed.Horn said 110 loads of trees had already been removed from the site and that damage was being done to the ecosystem. He also told supervisors that the project would affect property values in Polk Township.Horn invited the supervisors to attend the Aug. 25 hearing in Penn Forest. The zoning hearing board will meet at 6 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Penn Forest Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 on Route 903 in Jim Thorpe.
