Man drowns in Lehigh River in Jim Thorpe

Crews recovered the body of a man from the Lehigh River near Glen Onoko Wednesday night after a reported drowning.

The man has been identified as Louis Jose Vegas, 53, address unknown, according to Terry Brady, press secretary with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. An autopsy was scheduled for this morning at Lehigh Valley Hospital to determine how Vegas died, Brady said.Vegas went missing around 4 p.m. in the Lehigh River, just north of Glen Onoko Run and Jim Thorpe in Lehigh Gorge State Park.Firefighters from companies in Jim Thorpe, Lehighton and Lehigh and Lausanne townships conducted a thorough search of the river, and around 6 p.m., recovered Vegas in about 8 feet of water.Vegas is from out of state, and was visiting the glen as part of an outing with a church group from Freeport, New York, Brady said."We did have a male that was found in the river, he's from out of state, and unfortunately, he's passed away," chief deputy coroner Gerald Jones Jr. with the Carbon County coroner's office said Wednesday on scene.A group of people at the scene were visibly distraught after talking with rangers. Others at the scene said the man suffered a medical emergency before going under the water, but Jones said at the time that he did not know if that was the case."We're still dealing with all of the circumstances around it until the investigation is complete," Jones said. The incident is being investigated by the DCNR. Officials with the Fish and Boat Commission were also on scene. The drowning was not related to the Glen Onoko Falls, where two men were injured, one fatally, in a fall earlier this year. It is the third death in the park this year.In April, a 72-year-old White Haven man was found dead along the Lehigh Gorge Trail after suffering an apparent heart attack while cycling.Reporter Terry Ahner contributed to this story.
