A Weatherly man admitted to a drug dealing charge in Carbon County court on Tuesday, but because of his efforts to defeat his addiction problem, he was spared addition jail time.

Brett Henry Scott, 26, pleaded to one count each of criminal conspiracy-possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance. He was originally charged with eight drug-related counts with the others dropped in a plea bargain.He was arrested by Weatherly police following an investigation of drug dealing in the borough. Scott was involved in a sale along Carbon Street on Aug. 20, 2015. There is a co-defendant in the case.After spending 95 days in jail on the charges, Scott was furloughed to enter the inpatient rehabilitation program run by the Salvation Army. He successfully completed the program and continues counseling sessions.Scott told Matika, "I'm grateful to be alive today. If this didn't happen I would be dead today." Scott said his drug addiction struck home when two of his friends overdosed and died. He said others he knew also overdosed on drugs.Matika told Scott, "Consider yourself one of the fortunate ones. You got help." He said probably without the help he got, Scott would be with the friends who overdosed.Matika sentenced him to serve time served (95 days) to one day less 24 months in prison and ordered he get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, render 75 hours of community service, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, make restitution of $360, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole.
