Teen who stole for drug habit sentenced

A Carbon County teen who admitted stealing to support her drug habit was sentenced to a county prison term on Tuesday after entering guilty pleas in four pending criminal cases before Judge Joseph J. Matika.

Zoey Bartenope, 19, of Palmerton, pleaded to two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and three counts of retail theft. The three retail thefts all occurred at the Walmart store in Mahoning Township on Jan. 27, and Feb. 1 and 2. The Feb. 2 count followed a traffic stop after police responded to a retail theft incident. At the stop, Bartenope was found with drug paraphernalia. The other paraphernalia count stems from an Oct. 30, 2015, vehicle stop along Route 443 by Lehighton police. Bartenope was a passenger in the vehicle and found to have the paraphernalia.Bartenope, who is in prison on the charges and a pending probation revocation proceeding, told the court, "I'm into hard drugs. I need help."She added, "Heroin is nothing to fool around with. I want help, I don't want to be an addict anymore."Matika, noting he had Bartenope before him in juvenile court, told her, "You let me down. I gave you another chance and you let me down."Matika said Bartenope went down the "drug road" fast and into heavy use of heroin. He added, "If you don't get help now, it will kill you."On all the counts Matika sentenced her to a total of six to 12 months in prison followed by one year of probation. She was given credit for 180 days spent to date on the charges, which is close to his minimum. However, with the pending probation revocation proceeding, she could see more jail time. She was also ordered to render 100 hours of community service when released on parole, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendations for treatment, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, make total restitution to Walmart of $583.67, supply a DNA sample, pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole and probation and stay out of the Walmart store.
