Motorists in Jim Thorpe beware.

During a borough council meeting Thursday night, Jim Thorpe Mayor Michael Sofranko said police are "ramping up" speeding enforcement, specifically on North Street, also known as Route 903."Since the new Route 903 bridge has opened, it's kind of become a launching pad over there," Sofranko said.On Wednesday night, for example, police wrote 14 citations in a three-hour period.Approaching the bridge from North Street on the east side of the borough, there is no traffic light, meaning motorists have a straight shot down a hill and onto the bridge.The speed limit is 25 mph."We were seeing speeds of between 47-67 mph there and it just has to stop," Sofranko. "I know there was a lot of construction going on in the borough and everyone was tired of sitting around in traffic, but enough is enough."Truck traffic has increased on Route 903 since the opening of the turnpike interchange in Penn Forest Township.Sofranko fears that additional truck traffic will be rerouted to the already busy thoroughfare after multiple tractor-trailer incidents on Route 93 within the past year.Speed won't be the only offense under the watchful eye of Jim Thorpe police.The department is also looking to cut down on motorists who don't come to a complete stop at stop signs and cars parked in front of a yellow curb."We're hearing the concerns of our residents," Sofranko said, "and we are addressing them."
