The trial of Spc. Caleb Barnes has been dominated in many ways by Jamie Silvonek, his girlfriend whose mother they are accused of murdering.

On Thursday, the jury heard texts showing that the two planned and carried out the murder of Cheryl Silvonek in March 2015.And throughout Barnes' trial this week on homicide charges, court watchers were focused on when, not if, Jamie Silvonek would testify.Silvonek pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in February. As part of her plea deal, she was expected to testify against Barnes, but only if called upon.On Thursday, prosecutors rested their case against Barnes without calling Silvonek to the stand.Jurors on Thursday did hear recorded jailhouse phone calls made by Barnes. During one, Barnes is weighing whether self-defense or insanity are viable defenses."I only remember doing it twice, and there's four of them. It was kind of a blur. It also helps I didn't cut anything off, I just buried her," Barnes could be heard saying on the grainy recorded call.In another call, someone can be heard asking Barnes to tell the truth. He says, "Even if it gets me a life sentence?"Also on Thursday, jurors read and heard text messages exchanged by Barnes and Silvonek in the days and week before the murder. Jamie deleted 23 of those texts, and Barnes also deleted texts, but they were recovered, thanks to the David M. Petzold Digital Forensics Lab at DeSales University.With Silvonek's testimony absent from the trial, the text messages are all that jurors got to hear from her. They paint a picture of a 14-year-old girl who is mature, and perhaps angry, beyond her years. The deception over Caleb's age seems to start around March 6, a week before the murder."If my family asks, you're 16. I know it's odd, but it will save us so much (double expletive)," she said."Are you serious? I thought your family was OK with me," Barnes texts back.Silvonek also pleads with her mother to let Barnes drive when they go on a date that day."I need this mom.""This is the only thing keeping me sane. I'm going to lose it."After Cheryl Silvonek says no, Jamie texted Barnes about their plans to kill her."She needs to go Caleb, right now. You don't understand," one text read."She threatened to throw me out of the house. I want her gone," another said.Silvonek tried to tell her mother that Barnes was 16, something that he was initially opposed to, according to the text messages. The messages suggest that he told Cheryl Silvonek his true age, 20, about a week before the murder. But he still ultimately went along with a plan, seemingly concocted by Jamie, to purchase a fake birth certificate and show it to Cheryl Silvonek."Tell her the reason you said 20 (years old) is because you tell other soldiers that to avoid harassment, and in stressful situations it just comes out," Silvonek said.A childhood friend of Jamie Silvonek's testified earlier this week that she overheard the two planning the murder on the phone. Text messages also alluded to that fact. On March 14, Cheryl Silvonek's last day alive, Jamie was encouraging Barnes to kill her."I'm going to the bathroom while you do it. OK?""I'll come right out as soon as you are done.""Why don't we wait to do it in her car.""Just do it."Assistant district attorney Jeffrey Dimmig and his team took turn reading the texts, playing the role of Jamie and Caleb.Defense attorney Richard Webster repeatedly objected to the way that the prosecution presented the text messages, arguing that voice inflection could skew their meaning.In a sidebar, Webster could be heard asking for a mistrial in the case, which Judge Maria Dantos swiftly denied. Dantos said that there is precedent for live reading of text messages in court.After the prosecution rested their case, the defense called Barnes' childhood best friend. Joshua Mix said he was at the concert where the couple met in October 2014. He recalled that Jamie was not forthcoming about her age when they met, and continued to refuse to tell Barnes her actual age during the time they were dating.
