Woman who used daughter in theft attempt gets probation

A Albrightsville woman who previously admitted using her then 14-year-old daughter in a theft attempt incident, was placed on a long probation period on Monday in Carbon County court.

Tammy Jane Scott, 40, was placed on two years of probation by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II on charges of retail theft and corruption of a minor. She was charged by state police at Lehighton on Dec. 17, 2015, for an incident at the Walmart store in Mahoning Township.Troopers responded to the store and were told by store security that Scott attempted to leave the store with $588.77 worth of merchandise without paying for it and that she used her 14-year-old daughter to assist in the theft incident. All the stolen items were recovered.Scott told Nanovic she has been struggling with mental health issues and the use of alcohol. She said she is currently in counseling sessions.Nanovic also ordered her to supply a DNA sample, get both mental health and drug and alcohol evaluations and follow recommendations for treatment, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee.She was also scheduled to be sentenced on a DUI charge but it was deferred because she failed to get a comprehensive drug and alcohol evaluation as was ordered by the court.Sentencing was continued to October and Nanovic told her she better have the evaluation done by then or face revocation of her bail and being placed in prison to get the evaluation done.
