Tamaqua athletes part of title run
Tamaqua's Brayden Knoblauch and Nate Boyle were a part of the Schuylkill Coal Crackers 14U travel baseball team that won the 2016 Ocean Breeze Tournament Championship at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Knoblauch and Boyle both had key roles in helping the Coal Crackers capture the title as both players pitched a pair of complete games during the tournament. One of Knoblauch's pitching gems occurred in the championship contest and earned him the game's MVP award.The tournament consisted of 19 teams from across the country. The Coal Crackers participated against teams from Texas, Massachusetts, New York, Illinois and Michigan.The Schuylkill County team defeated the Mizuno Spartans of Massachusetts in the semifinals, 6-1. Schuylkill then beat Texas Sports Red by a 4-2 margin in the championship game.The Coal Crackers started the tournament with two losses, but rebounded to win seven straight games and compiled a 7-2 tournament record.All the tournament games were played in replica major league parks. The Coal Crackers played on Ebbets Field, Crosley Field, the Polo Grounds and Griffiths field. Players also received Under Armour backpacks, championship trophies and rings.In addition to the two players from Tamaqua, the Schuylkill County team was comprised of players from the Pottsville, Shenandoah, North Schuylkill and Blue Mountain school districts.
