Phelan earns gold at Keystone Games

Three area field hockey players recently earned medals playing for Lehigh Valley teams at the Keystone State Games.

Maura Phelan of Lehighton Area High School was part of the gold-medal winning team in the Keystone Division (11th and 12th grade).Phelan was joined by players from Emmaus, Parkland, Liberty, Whitehall and Easton High Schools and was coached by legendary Emmaus coach Sue Butz-Stavin.The team went undefeated in five games, beating teams from the Philadelphia Metro, Nittany, Blue Mountain, Pocono and Capital regions. Lehigh Valley outscored its opposition 16-2 in the tournament.In the Junior Division (9th and 10th grade), Lehigh Valley earned the silver medal. Sayler Burke of Palmerton and Taylor Page of Northwestern were both part of the team.The team posted shutout victories over Philadelphia Metro, Blue Mountain, Nittany and Pocono, outscoring those four opponents, 12-0.Its only loss was a 1-0 setback at the hands of Capitol.Burke tied for the team lead in goals scored with three. Page shared the LV goalkeeper position.Competition in both divisions was held July 29-31 at Central York High School.
