Penn Forest residents request zoning revisions

Penn Forest resident Marcus Laurence presented a letter to the Penn Forest board of supervisors noting that it is the intention of a group of concerned residence to conduct research into strengthening the township's zoning ordinance with regard to wind energy projects.

While the letter references the current application of Atlantic Wind LLC that is before the zoning hearing board, Laurence made it clear that this effort is not expected to apply to that project. The letter stated in part that, "we would like to ensure that any future applications be subject to the most current, appropriate and reasonable standards to ensure the general welfare of the community, and preserve and protect the Community Development Objectives identified within Section 102 of the Zoning Ordinance, as well as the purpose and objective of the Township's Residential Zoning Districts identified in Section 301.D."Laurence's letter also stated that the group did not expect the township to contribute to the cost of evaluating the ordinance and making recommendations on changes. The board indicated that they welcomed the input from residents, and township solicitor Thomas Nanovic said it is very common for residents to approach the supervisors with suggested amendments for their consideration. Also speaking to the board was recreation committee member Richard Strack.Strack said that the committee has been busy meeting with various sports organizations in the area, and the general feeling is the sod on the small ball field is a bad idea."We have already discussed this and I explained it to the others (board members)," Chairman Warren Reiner said. "We are not going to make any changes, and change orders would cost us more money, and the contractor would have been done if not for the change in the weather. If not for the rain the last few days that field would be sodded by now."Supervisor Scott Lignore said that the board would be interested in hearing what the committee had to say on future projects, but that they need to talk before the projects get this far along.Strack said the use of sod makes the field unusable for other sports such as men's or women's softball or for any other tournaments, and that the sod would make the field sit idle for most of the summer months.During the meeting, Reiner said the township had received a few complaints about issues at the transfer station and that he would be looking into them. He said the employees are not permitted to lift garbage bags for residents unless they are handicapped and require assistance.Reiner also said the ordinance is for garbage bags 30 gallons or less and that often people bring bags so heavy two people have to lift them, and that is not permitted.Nanovic swore in new fire police officer Adam Wieckowski to the position before the meeting.
