Three cheers for coach Romanisko

Julie Romanisko graduated from Jim Thorpe Area High School in 1988 and right after graduation became the assistant cheerleading coach at the high school, taking on the responsibility of being the choreographer of the Jim Thorpe Cheerleading program.

For the past 27 years, she has been devising dances, cheers, chants, band, parade and competition routines for the cheerleaders.She was a cheerleader herself in Junior High and High School and went on to be a member of the co-ed cheerleading squad at the Hazleton campus of Penn State and received her BA in psychology and masters' degree in counselor education from the main campus at Penn State in 1994.She became the assistant cheerleading coach at Jim Thorpe in 1989 and in 2001 became the head cheerleading coach.During that time, the cheerleading squad won numerous awards.Between 1997 and 2002 they won the Cheer, Limited Choreography contest six consecutive years. During that stretch they won the best cheer award once and the best chant award twice.It has been through her expertise, experience, professionalism and dedication that, over the past two and a half decades, the Jim Thorpe Cheerleading Program has been so successful and a testament to her creativity that Cheer, Ltd., a large international company, has recognized her for her talents.From 2001 to the present she has received accreditation from the National Cheerleaders Association, the Universal Cheerleading Association and the American Association of Cheer Coaches and Administrators and is a member of the National Federation of High School Spirit Coaches.She is currently employed by the Pleasant Valley School District as an Intermediate School Counselor.The 27th annual Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall Of Fame banquet will be held at the Jim Thorpe Memorial Hall on Saturday, Aug. 20.A cocktail hour will begin at 5 p.m, dinner at 6 p.m., and the induction ceremony at 7:15 p.m. Entertainment will begin at the conclusion of the induction ceremony which will be at approximately 8:30 p.m. The cost will be $35 per person and includes dinner, selected drinks and entertainment.Along with the Jim Thorpe 4x100 girls' relay, Matt Long and Julie Romanisko, the Times News will also publish the accomplishments of the remaining two inductees; Jim Maehrer and the 2006 Jim Thorpe tennis team before the induction banquet.Tickets can be obtained by calling Jack Kmetz at 570-325-4923 or Wilmer Redline at 570-325-3073.
