Hazleton man sentenced in drug case

A Hazleton plea pleaded guilty to a drug-selling charge in Carbon County court on Thursday afternoon and was immediately sentenced to a state prison term.

Anthony Jordan Vega, 20, pleaded to one count of criminal conspiracy-possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance-heroin.Judge Steven R. Serfass immediately sentenced him to serve 15 to 48 months in a state correctional institution.Vega, 19, and Joshua Ynoe Mejia, 23, also of Hazleton were arrested in December 2014 by agents of the state Attorney General's office and officers of the county drug task force following an investigation into drug dealing in the area.According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by police, a confidential informant met with the pair to purchase narcotics. Before the meet, the informant made contact with the defendants, requesting heroin.Vega and Mejia agreed to meet in a common area at Gypsy Hill in Lehighton.Following the arrest a search was conducted and agents discovered 130 bags of suspected heroin, as well as more than $1,000 in cash.Vega and Mejia are charged with possession with intent to deliver, criminal conspiracy and possession of a controlled substance and related counts.Vega was the driver of the vehicle, and his attorney, Christopher B. Jones, claimed he did not make the actual sale.Vega told Serfass, "I take full responsibility for my actions."Vega has been in jail since March 26, 2015, and was given credit for 483 days already served in the county prison. He was also ordered to supply a DNA sample, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, zero tolerance on drug and alcohol use and pay court costs of $1,000.
