Community cleanup at Bake Oven Knob Sunday

A community cleanup has been organized for hawk-look out, Bake Oven Knob on Bake Oven Road in East Penn Township.

Wildlife Conservation Officer Kevin Halbfoerster will lead volunteers in trash collection and covering graffiti on the rocks of the scenic destination.According to Halbfoerster, the effort will take an estimated two hours or less depending on the number of people who volunteer."There's an awful lot of trash and graffiti to cover up," said Dan Kunkle, director of the Lehigh Gap Nature Center."People abuse the place. The litter is bad enough, but the spray paint is the worst. We can't just pick up the graffiti and take it away," he said. The Bake Oven Knob to Lehigh Gap is a 16.4-mile moderately trafficked section of the Appalachian Trail. The oven is located on the top of the Blue Mountain ridge. Anyone wishing to join in the cleanup should meet at 1 p.m., Sunday at the oven lot at the top of the hill on Bake Oven Road.Volunteers are encouraged to bring plenty of water and sunblock.
