Mother, daughter killed in crash

Route 93 between Packer Township and Nesquehoning was shut down for nearly three hours Friday evening because of a crash that claimed the life of a mother and daughter.

The crash occurred just after 4 p.m. along Route 93.Carbon County Coroner Robert Miller confirmed that two of the four passengers traveling southbound in a Chevrolet Equinox were killed after their vehicle veered off the roadway and struck a tree.He said he is working to locate the women's next of kin and was unable to release the women's ages, hometowns or identities at this time.Two children in the Equinox were also injured in the crash.Two medical helicopters were initially called as emergency responders from Nesquehoning, Hauto and New Columbus fire departments, as well as Packer Township and Nesquehoning police worked at the scene.Fire police from Nesquehoning, Hauto, New Columbus and Weatherly provided traffic control, and Lehighton Ambulance also responded.The road reopened to traffic shortly after 7 p.m.
